Inside the Yard: Major Refit Stories from the Port Whangarei Marine Centre
150+ Haul-Outs Under 20m in One Summer Season
Whangārei, NZ — The Port Whangarei Marine Centre continues to build momentum as one of the country’s most capable refit and maintenance yards, with a strong summer season reflecting both high demand and growing capability across a wide range of vessels.
A Season of Standout Projects
Over the summer period, the yard has delivered several notable refits, each showcasing the depth of trades and project coordination available on site.
A 65ft Catana catamaran underwent a full repaint and deck overhaul, combining detailed composite work with rigging upgrades. The project required close coordination across multiple trades to meet tight timeframes while maintaining a high-quality finish.
One of the more complex refits saw a custom carbon fibre vessel undergo an extensive upgrade programme ahead of an Antarctic voyage. The scope included a full repaint using specialised composite coating systems, major electrical upgrades to improve onboard performance and reliability, and structural reinforcement works to handle extreme operating conditions. The project was centred on ensuring the vessel was fully prepared for safe and capable operation in cold-weather environments.

Alongside these larger projects, the yard maintained a high volume of work, completing over 150 haul-outs for vessels under 20 metres during the summer season, highlighting strong engagement from both local and coastal boat owners.
Capability Across the Board
What continues to set Port Whangarei Marine Centre apart is its ability to manage diverse and technically demanding projects within one yard. With trades covering coatings, engineering, electrical, fabrication, and mechanical services, vessels benefit from streamlined project management and efficient turnaround times.
The yard’s infrastructure, including its travel lift capacity, refit sheds, and hardstand space, supports everything from routine maintenance through to complex, multi-stage refits.
