First Anniversary for Port Whangarei Marine Centre

Port Whangarei Marine Centre, South Shipyard, New Zealand – Sealed Hardstand Serviced by 100T Travel Lift

It’s been 1 year since the Port Whangarei Marine Centre (PWMC) lifted its first vessel. In November 2015 the PWMC commenced operations with its newly commissioned 100T travel lift. With a fully sealed hardstand, extensive refit/paint shed options, high quality crew amenities and services it has quickly established itself as the boatyard of choice in the region.

PWMC is part of the Oceania Marine Group which operates from three sites within Port Whangarei, New Zealand. Group Managing Director, Martin Gleeson, said that it has been a hectic first year. 

“The South Shipyard project was a redevelopment of an existing marine site undertaken to accommodate the PWMC. From our first haulout last November to where we are now has been quite a journey as it has not been just about setting up the infrastructure. Because we run a full service yard, our specialist work teams, sub-contractors and suppliers have all had to be made available within the boatyard. This has been a big undertaking and all credit must go to General Manager Brad Hall and his team for what they have achieved”.

Currently the boatyard is almost at full capacity and options to extend into neighbouring vacant land are under consideration. The next stage of development at South Shipyard is the installation of a 560T travel lift which puts additional pressure on the need to expand the hardstand area. Accordingly, it looks highly likely that the next twelve months or so will see another busy year of expansion at the marine centre.
